The most popular garage conversions
Every garage we convert starts as the same thing: an unused, unheated space that costs money to own and gives nothing back. What it becomes depends entirely on what your household is missing. These are the conversions we're asked for most, roughly in order of popularity.
- Extra bedroom — for a growing family, a teenager or guests, with or without an en-suite. The conversion that adds the most value at resale.
- Home office — a quiet, insulated workspace with proper power, data and lighting, separate from family life.
- Annexe or granny flat — independent living for a relative, with bedroom, shower room and kitchenette.
- Home gym — rubber floors, ventilation, mirrors and the right fixings for racks and bags.
- Playroom — a warm, safe space for children that becomes a den or study as they grow.
- Utility room — laundry, boot room and downstairs WC out of the kitchen; often combined with another room.
- Living room or open-plan kitchen — knock through to create the space you'd otherwise need an extension for.
Other ideas we've built
- Cinema or games room — blackout, acoustic insulation, a big screen and a bar.
- Music or podcast studio — acoustic treatment, isolated power and cable routes.
- Beauty, hair or treatment room — sink, easy-clean surfaces and a separate client entrance.
- Dog room or pet grooming space — tiled floors, a shower tray and a door to the garden.
- Bar and entertaining space opening onto the garden with bi-fold doors.
- Workshop or craft studio with heavy-duty benches, dust extraction and 16A supplies.
- Downstairs bedroom with wet room for accessible living or a relative with limited mobility.
Single, double or detached?
The size and type of your garage shapes what's realistic. A single garage makes one good-sized room, or a smaller room plus utility or storage. A double garage can become two rooms, a master suite or an annexe, or be half-converted to keep one bay for the car. A detached garage can become a garden office, studio or annexe, subject to its structure and planning rules.
